Stem Cells

Allow me to briefly explain why many Conservatives such as myself oppose embryonic stem cell research.

The argument given by many proponents is that these stem cells come from frozen embryos that are going to be discarded anyway. Why not use their stem cells and try to find cures for many life threatening diseases?

Because these embryos should not be “discarded” in the first place. Take a look at pictures of some of these “leftover” embryos. Should these children be killed so that you and I won’t have to worry about Alzheimer’s? These so-called leftover embryos were not discarded. They were adopted by loving families. Their faces prove there is no such thing as a leftover embryo.

It would be easy and convenient for us to simply destroy these children for the sake of science. They are, after all, just clumps of cells. It is easy to ignore their faces. And after all, this research can save lives.

But, finding good in evil only justifies the evil. I have a relative who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. It is a terrible disease that robs its victim of his memories, his personality, all that makes him who he is. But these children are not just commodities that we can use for our benefit. There is nothing that makes them different from you or me. In every sense of the word, they are human. There are other sources of stem cells that can be utilized without destroying life.
