Bush Meets Abbas
The AP reported that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas believes, “the boundaries of a future Palestinian state should be those that existed before the 1967 war.” That’s just short of saying, “death to Israel.” The 1967 borders have been called “Auschwitz borders” because Israel would not be able to defend those borders. At its thinnest, Israel would only be about 10 miles wide. Only 10 miles between the sea and the terrorists.
Abbas’ comment could possibly be a negotiating tactic (demand more than you actually expect to get), but I doubt it. His comment is consistent with past Palestinian demands.
Nevertheless, President Bush has pledged $50 million dollars to the Palestinian Authority to help build new housing in Gaza. The very grateful Palestinians called it a, “modest beginning.”
President Bush had many nice things to say about Abbas, but Cliff May said on The Corner, “Bush described not who Abbas is, but who he hopes Abbas may become.”
By the way, my spellchecker recognizes “Mahmoud Abbas,” but not “spellchecker.” Oh, well.
