On American Generosity, and the Master

Ours is a great country. I know that gets said so much that it is almost a cliche, but it’s true. America is a great country. We are the first democracy of the modern world, the first nation to guarantee true freedom of religion, and the most generous nation in the world.

“We are six percent or less of the world's population, yet we give almost half. We are a very small number of people, relatively speaking, and we carry the weight of a dozen countries. Secondly, we maintain a military structure that keeps the peace of the world.....Who is in the Indian Ocean with the aircraft carriers, helicopters, skilled personnel? No one has the infrastructure in the world, we spend almost half a trillion dollars a year on our military structure, which is essentially the fire department of the planet and it is always at the disposal of people hit in a national disaster.....Incidentally on food aid, we give 60% of all the food aid in the world. It is simply irresponsible to talk about the U.S. as anything other than the most generous nation on the planet.” Charles Krauthammer - FOX News Sunday

I love Krauthammer. If he were a woman, I’d marry him. If you ever see him on Special Report, look for this: while the other commentators are arguing with each other over the day’s topics, Krauthammer sits back silently and takes it all in. When he decides it is time for him to say something, he signals Brit Hume who then signals to the rest of the commentators that the Master is ready to speak. They all immediately quite down. Then Krauthammer begins to speak: a soft voice expressing strong ideas. And no one, no one dares interrupt him. If someone does, the Master will quickly put the misbehaving student in his place. I love Krauthammer.
