Freedom

President Bush delivered his second inaugural address today. In his speech he spoke eloquently on the value and power of freedom. The Texas Heritage Party would like to second his statements.

Freedom is the only path to human prosperity and happiness because oppression is the root of human despair and misery and freedom is the cure to oppression. Every man’s needs and wants can be satisfied by the proper use of his freedom. Governments must stand aside and guarantee to every citizen his freedom to, not guarantee freedom from.

During the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union would often proclaim itself “the most free nation in the world.” Many people wondered how could the Soviet Union, infamous for sending political opponents to die in Siberia, could make such a claim. The Soviets pointed out that every Soviet citizen was guaranteed freedom FROM hunger, unemployment, need, homelessness, et cetera. Of course, the Soviet Union protected its citizens from these hardships at the cost of the citizens’ freedoms TO say, do, and believe what their consciences demanded. As a result, the Soviet government never protected its citizens from these hardships or even from itself and it collapsed as the citizenry demanded to be released from the burden their government had placed on them. Such is the fate of every government that promises security and prosperity at the cost of freedom.

The United States of America was the first and is still the only nation founded on the principle that the government’s only proper role is to secure the liberty of the people and to stand aside as the people use that liberty to solve every other ill that troubles them. In his speech, President Bush proclaimed that “By making every citizen an agent of his or her own destiny, we will give our fellow Americans greater freedom from want and fear, and make our society more prosperous and just and equal.” When a man is allowed to live his life as he sees fit, he will secure his own prosperity without the need of government aid. While securing his own prosperity, he will also encourage the prosperity and growth of those around him. When government takes the stand that it knows best, it smothers the fire of entrepreneurship, innovation, and charity that powers the engine of a free and prosperous nation.

President Bush said, “America, in this young century, proclaims liberty throughout all the world, and to all the inhabitants thereof.” The Texian Party stands today and forever with him in this noble and sacred cause.
