My Cup Runneth Over. (If yours isn’t, it must be leaking)
Have you ever noticed that non-Christians always seem to be interested in what other people believe? They are the ones in the Religious Studies classes. They are the ones who read ancient Buddhist texts. Meanwhile Christians don’t seem to be concerned at all. The typical excuse for this is that Christians are close-minded hicks. This excuse, of course, hides what is really happening. Non-Christians find themselves incomplete. They know they are lacking something. That is something they can feel in their souls, hearts, and minds. Whatever beliefs they hold don’t seem to be enough so they seek out more, like a cup with a hole in the bottom that constantly needs to be filled up again. Christians, on the other hand, have finished their search. They were once like the non-Christians, seeking something that will fill them up, something that will satisfy their hunger. They discovered the Truth that made them whole. They are not interested in other belief systems because they have found all they need. Many Christians (including me) had studied a variety of religions while we sought the Truth. When we discovered it, we were able to plug the hole in the bottom of our cups, and our cups were filled and now spill over to be shared with our neighbors.

So, Christians are not close-minded. They have discovered the Truth and once you have found the Truth, you are no longer interested in other religions. Once the Sun has come up, you no longer need the flashlight. However, I would argue that it is the non-Christians who are close-minded. Take for example this very popular book, The Da Vinci Code. Admittedly, I haven’t read the book but I have heard the stories and theories before. The book is based on the theory that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, started a family, and his descendants founded the French Royal Family. Included in this theory are stories about the Holy Grail, and “secret” religious groups such as the Knights Templar. Obviously, Christians have some major problems with this book, and non-Christians point to this as an example of just how close-minded Christians are. They’ll say Christians are not willing to accept anything that contradicts their beliefs. Let me say it again. Anything contrary to the Truth is a lie and therefore not worth our time. But let’s look at this from another perspective. There is just as much hard evidence backing up The Da Vinci Code as the Bible. The question from non-Christians is, “If the evidence is lacking, why do you believe the Bible?” The same could be asked of them. The evidence is lacking for The Da Vinci Code as well, so why believe it? Here we discover their close-mindedness. They are not willing to consider the Bible and Christianity seriously. Why? Because it is the Bible. Because it is Christianity. There is no other reason. They, in fact, are guilty of what they accuse us.
